Around Town: British Columbia Codes 2018
Over the summer, the Province adopted the 2018 edition of the British Columbia Building Code, including Book II Plumbing Services. The BC Fire Code is anticipated to be adopted this fall and both codes will be effective December 10.
Among other updates, the BC Building Code 2018 references new building energy efficiency codes and standards. Some of the changes include: enhanced requirements for roofs, walls and fenestration; additional controls for lighting to reduce energy use; and new efficiency and rating requirements for some mechanical systems. The new requirements contribute to the Province’s goal of requiring net-zero energy ready buildings in the BC Building Code by 2032.
Significant code updates also include changes to Area Calculation of Exposing Building Face, Accessibility, Asbestos, Exit Signs, Fenestration, Factory Constructed Buildings, Mid-Rise Combustible Construction, Water Efficiency of Plumbing Fixtures, Radon Data, Heritage Buildings, Stairs.
The online version of the BC Building Code 2018 is available for purchase at bccodes.ca. The print version is expected at a later date and will soon be available at all BC Public Libraries.
