Around Town: Update on John Hart Dam Generating Station Replacement Project

Preparatory work for excavation of the surge tank site is underway, with excavation expected to begin this month. The cofferdam dewatering is underway, and excavation for the operating gate structure at the intake is now underway. Frontier-Kemper continues drilling and blasting within the surge chamber and has completed about 50 metres of 93 metres.

Tunnelling is complete for the Service Tunnel, and Adits B, C, and D. The main access tunnel and excavation of the powerhouse is expected to be complete this spring. Drilling for the water works intake tunnel is expected to be complete this fall, while excavation of the surge tank tunnel to the power tunnel will be complete in the winter of 2016.

Excavation of the third rock level of the powerhouse is nearly complete, with 22 metres of vertical rock removed and 18 metres remaining. This is where the main floor of the powerhouse will be. Excavation of the fourth rock level is expected to begin in early February.
