A survey conducted earlier this year by a Canadian bank found that nearly 40 per cent of B.C. homeowners were planning on renovating their homes. And while that’s great news for the construction industry, it’s important to be aware of the health dangers that asbestos-containing building materials in older homes pose to contractors and their crew. During pre-budget business case presentations on November 20, Campbell River City Council approved an additional building inspector position.
“Campbell River is still seeing high levels of construction with hundreds of new dwellings built in the past year.” says city manager Deborah Sargent. “Our development services department has been struggling to keep up with demand, partly because we’re down to one building inspector, but primarily due to increasing demand for service.” (more…)
WorkSafeBC is launching an awareness campaign and guide to educate employers and workers about impairment in the workplace. Impairment in the workplace isn’t a new issue in BC, but it’s become top of mind as cannabis becomes legal for recreational use.
The State of the Island Economic Report recently released at the annual Vancouver Island Economic Summit anticipates limited economic growth in 2019 due in part to a tight labour market. The report is an unbiased view of the island’s economy compiled by accounting firm Myers Norris Penny. A competitive labour scene is expected to limit the ability of Vancouver Island businesses to significantly expand in the near term.
According to the Vancouver Island Real Estate Board’s (VIREB) October Statistics, sales of single-family homes from Duncan to Port Hardy were down 16 per cent from October 2017 and up 11 per cent from September 2018. Multiple offers have slowed, and buyers are taking more of a wait-and-see approach. (more…)
