Editor’s Note – July 23, 2014
In this week’s issue, we feature the construction statistics for the first six months of 2014. Single family home construction is up in Comox, the CVRD and in Cumberland. Campbell River and Courtenay saw declines in new home construction from January to June of this year, compared to the same time period last year. Overall, total construction values were down slightly by 18% from $83,668,456 to $68,218,884 in 2014 compared to 2013. See page 2 of this issue for a complete analysis.
A new connector road extending from Veterans Memorial Parkway towards and across the Tsolum River via a new bridge is in the planning stages. Provincial transportation and infrastructure minister Todd Stone and his staff are currently working to identify the potential route and likely costs of the project and hope to present a proposed new route by the fall of 2014.
Campbell River City Council and BC Hydro have agreed to terms for funding, timing and construction of a new municipal water supply in the John Hart reservoir. BC Hydro has agreed to fund 75% of the costs (to a maximum of $12.5 million) for the design and construction of an independent City water delivery system.
