New BC Codes in Around Town
The new BC Codes take effect on March 8 2024, except for adaptable dwellings and earthquake changes which take effect in 2025. These codes will apply to building permits applied for on or after that date. Permits in place before March 8 will generally not be affected by the changes.Â
BC Codes 2024 are largely based on the National Codes 2020 with some BC-specific variations to reflect provincial priorities. Among the 2024 changes are rough-in requirements for radon safety province-wide, residential cooling requirements, ventilation for single dwelling units, and mass timber construction details.
Adaptable dwellings and earthquake changes in 2025 will include a minimum adaptable dwellings requirements for apartments and condominiums, reinforced bathroom walls for grab bar systems, and improved earthquake design.
