Second Quarter Building Permit Statistics in Around Town

July 25, 2024

This week’s Building Links report includes the year to day building permit statistics. The $201,292,112 total permit value for 2024 is 8% lower than January to June 2023.  Courtenay is down 61% due primarily to five multi-storey buildings started in June 2023 that are now wrapping up construction. Campbell River is up 108%, due primarily to a March 2024 permit for $45 million for renovations to the Strathcona Recreation Centre.

Year-over-year comparisons show a decrease in residential and commercial permits on North Vancouver Island.

The number of residential (single to multi-storey, renovations) permits have decreased by 47% and commercial permits have decreased by 12%.

For residential, the 47% decrease is due to less residential renovations and multi family (5+ units). In the first half of 2023, permits were issued for 608 multi-family units. So far this year, permits have been issued for 235 multi-family units.

The statistics on page 2 of this week’s report shows a summary of year-to-date permits, with comparing total $ values and single-family permits to the half year totals for 2023.

Building Links continues to track an estimated $700 million in projects with over 3000 residential units on the Central North Island, West Coast and Powell River.
