Women in BC Trades Increases in Around Town

May 30, 2024

According to BuildForce Canada, 4.5% of construction trade workers in BC are women and the industry has hired over 60% more women aged 15 to 24 between 2022 and 2023.

Recruiting women into the construction trades is a great opportunity for employers to fill job vacancies, but female workers do experience barriers and stigmas. (Image courtesy WorkLink Employment Society).

That translates to nearly 17,000 women entering the trades, but more workers are needed. A report by the Independent Contractors and Businesses Association indicates that about a third of construction companies on Vancouver Island expect to be busier this year, yet 77% are still looking for workers.

Despite these gains, women still only represent 4.5% of construction trade workers. Women face many barriers and stigmas when entering the trades. One such barrier is personal protective equipment. A report by the Canadian Standards Association found that 92 percent of about 500 women construction workers surveyed reported one or more problems with personal protective equipment. Solution-oriented businesses are supporting their tradeswomen by offering PPE and workwear specifically for women.

Post-secondary institutions also play a key role in encouraging female tradespeople. Several colleges and universities on Vancouver Island provide Women in Trades exploration programs with work experience opportunities. These programs creates a safe space for women and members of gender equity groups to learn about opportunities in the trades and make informed decisions for their futures.

Overall, the increase in the number of women entering the trades industry in Canada is a positive step towards breaking down gender barriers and creating a more inclusive space for everyone.
