Port Alberni: A Step Code information session will be held on November 17.
The City of Port Alberni is hosting a series of information sessions for the construction community regarding the Step Code, Building Bylaw changes, and Permit Fee increases. The first session is in partnership with the Alberni-Clayoquot Regional District and will focus on the Step Code. The BC Energy Step Code is a performance-based standard that establishes measurable requirements for energy efficiency in new construction. To demonstrate compliance, builders must ensure that buildings meet or exceed a set of defined metrics for building components. The BC Building and Safety Standards Branch is proposing January 2023 revisions to the B.C. Building Code with regards to minimum energy efficiency for most Part 9 and Part 3 buildings. The Step Code session will be held Thursday, November 17 from 6:30 – 8:00 p.m. at the Echo Centre – Cedar Room East, 4255 Wallace Street, Port Alberni. Dates and time for the other sessions on Building Bylaws and Permit Fees are to be determined.
Port Alberni: A building permit has been issued for a 30 unit tiny home village.
The Port Alberni Friendship Center has been issued a building permit in the amount of $650,000 for the development of a tiny home village on City owned land adjacent to the Winter Green Apartments property. A temporary use permit was issued in September for a two year period. The tiny home village will offer small but safe temporary transitional housing to marginalized people. The project includes two sanitary stations, one office, and other amenities. BC Housing has partnered with Port Alberni Friendship Center for this project.
Campbell River: The City is reviewing options for future development in the Quinsam Heights area.
The City of Campbell River is creating a Project Advisory Team (PAT) to guide the future growth of the Quinsam Heights Neighbourhood. The city awarded the consultant tender for the project to MODUS Planning (Vancouver) in June 2022. Upon completion, the Quinsam Heights Neighbourhood Plan will serve as a land use policy framework to manage growth and development within the area over a 20-year time horizon. It will also inform future updates to the Official Community Plan scheduled to begin in 2023. The first meeting will be scheduled early December and includes representatives from BC Transit, School District, the Development community and several local organizations/groups/advisory committees. The project is anticipated to run until the end of 2023.
