Port Alberni: New 40-unit affordable housing project.
The M’akola Housing Society has received funding through the province’s Community Housing Fund for a 40-unit project in Port Alberni. The project will include 40 units of affordable rentals for families and seniors at 2866 Fourth Avenue, in the former Woodward’s parking lot. In June 2023, Council approved rezoning for a 8 unit townhome development and AFC Construction was issued a $1.4 million building permit for the first fourplex in October 2023.
Courtenay: New 60 unit supportive housing and 40 bed permanent overnight shelter.
BC Housing has announced the purchase of 925 Braidwood Avenue for a proposed supportive housing and permanent overnight shelter in Courtenay. The housing project is expected to contain approximately 60 units, as well as a separate, permanent, purpose-built shelter with room for approximately 40 beds. The buildings are also proposed to have additional space to be used as an extreme weather response shelter during cold weather. Once approved by the city council, the site will be rezoned for the proposed use. City council adopted a rezoning bylaw amendment for a proposed 161 unit senior’s care facility on this property in 2020. The site is located adjacent to the RCMP building, is zoned multi-family, and is currently vacant with minimal vegetation. Construction is scheduled to begin early in 2025, and council is considering a variety of construction options including a modular facility.
