Comox Valley: $9.8 million for five transit exchanges

The Comox Valley Regional District has been awarded $9,861,000 in grant funding for five new or upgraded transit exchanges in Courtenay, Comox and Oyster River and two priority measures (transit bypass lanes). The five new or upgraded transit exchanges include: Downtown Courtenay (England Avenue and 8th Street); South Courtenay (Cliffe Avenue at Anfield Road); Downtown Comox (Port Augusta Street at Comox Avenue); North Island College (Campus Road in front of Aquatic Centre); Oyster River (Glenmore Road by Discovery Foods in Strathcona Regional District, Electoral Area ‘D’). Transit priority measures are located at two key intersections along Old Island Highway, at the bottom of Ryan Road and at Comox Road, to allow transit to bypass traffic congestion as a priority mode of transportation. These sites were identified in the Comox Valley Transit Infrastructure Study in 2021. The transit exchange projects generally involve concrete bays for buses as well as passenger amenities such as bus shelters, lighting, garbage cans, signage, bike racks and landscaping. A transit operator washroom facility will also be included at the South Courtenay location. BC Transit will lead these projects, with support from the CVRD. Design and public engagement will occur in 2024, and BC Transit has engaged specialists as needed. Procurement and construction will occur beginning in 2025 and carry into 2026.

Campbell River:  Island Health moving forward with $85 million Long Term Care Home

Vancouver Island Health Authority has awarded the contract for a Geotechnical Consultant for the Campbell River Long Term Care (LTC) Home Project to Thurber Engineering Ltd. (Victoria). VIHA has also awarded the Quantity Surveyor contract to BYC Consultancy Group (Toronto). The project is a three-storey, 153 bed LTC facility. The site is on the west side of the North Island Hospital Campbell River and currently occupied by a temporary gravel parking lot. The site poses unique challenges including a history of previous land use and a restrictive covenant dictating geotechnical standards. The construction cost estimate is approximately $85 million.

North Island: 2 all-day planned power outages at the end of May

Several North Island communities will have a planned all-day power outage (8 a.m. to 7 p.m.) on Sunday, May 26. The Village of Port Alice will also have a second all-day planned outage (8 a.m. to 7 p.m.) on Tuesday, May 28. BC Hydro will be replacing five end-of-life transmission structures. Three of the structures will be replaced using trucks, and the other two will be replaced using a helicopter in order to reach more difficult terrain. The two hard-to-reach areas are located along the transmission line between the Gold River substation and the Woss substation, and the other three replacements that are being done by truck are located on the line north of the Woss substation. For Port Alice’s power outage, crews will be working on 10 structure replacements on the village’s service line.
