Tofino: Mackenzie Beach Campground expanding staff RV housing from 20 to 30 units.
The Mackenzie Beach Campground has been approved to operate a 30-unit recreational vehicle (RV) campground reserved for stays longer than 30 days for individuals employed in Tofino. There is an existing 20-unit RV campground on the subject property currently permitted under a Temporary Use Permit (TUP) that will expire on August 24, 2024, and cannot be renewed. The applicant has applied for a three-year TUP. As this TUP is not the same TUP that was previously issued in 2018 and then renewed in 2021, it can be issued as a “new” TUP under the provisions of the Local Government Act. The applicant will now move forward with adding 10 more RV units on the left of the existing Quonset Hut along MacKenzie Beach Road. Each unit will have 30 amp service, and connected water and sewer. Work will begin immediately, with the goal of completing the construction before the summer peak season to offer housing solutions.
Port Alberni: 22-unit strata project proposed for Beaver Creek
The Beaver Creek Advisory Planning Commission has forwarded a zoning application to the Alberni-Clayoquot Regional District (ACRD) for a 22-unit, under 800 sq.ft., strata project. The parcel is mostly cleared of trees and vegetation and is mostly level. Adoption of the application will be subject to: confirmation from a Registered Onsite Wastewater Practitioner that the portion of the property to be rezoned can support on-site sewage disposal; the applicants agreeing to the density and conditions to restrict the number of dwelling units to 20 detached units and 1 duplex and restrict the footprint of the dwelling units to 800 square feet of floor area each, excluding garages and carports; confirmation from the Beaver Creek Fire Department that adequate fire protection can be provided to the strata development; confirmation that the Beaver Creek Water System can adequately provide community water to the strata development; and meet all technical referral agency requirements. This multi-family residential rezoning application is consistent with the Beaver Creek Official Community Plan and a public hearing will not be held. The ACRD is expected to consider the application within the next few months.
Hornby Island: BC Parks has issued a tender for extensive improvements and new infrastructure.
BC Parks is soliciting the services required for the construction of new roads, parking lot, campsites, service centres, buildings, septic system, water and electrical utilities, and trails at three properties on Hornby Island including Tribune Bay Provincial Park, 5305 Shields Road and 5200 Shields Road. The project includes nearly doubling the number of campsites with infrastructure including 40 new walk-in sites, 66 drive-in sites, new roads and parking lots, power, water and plumbing, nine cabins, a new shower building, a new trail network, and an EV charging station. A live meeting will be held June 20, 10:00 am. The upgrades are expected to take two years between September 2024 and May 2026. The government purchased the parks on Shield Road for over $10 million in 2021. The tender closes July 11.
