Courtenay: Construction begins on a new childcare centre at the North Island College.

A building permit with a value of $12,573,402 million has been issued for this project. North Island College received $14.2 million funding for an additional 75 childcare spaces at the Beaufort Childcare Centre on the Comox Valley campus in the Fall of 2023. NIC has been planning for this expansion since 2021, when a contract for the Architectural Services for the facility was awarded to Stantec. The Centre will be located adjacent to the existing Beaufort Childcare Centre, which needs to remain operational throughout construction. The closing date for the RFP for a General Contractor was extended twice and closed in June. Kinetic is on site and the land is being cleared.

Comox: City is working through approvals for a new 205 unit apartment building.

A public hearing will be scheduled September 4th at 6 pm at 1801 Beaufort Avenue. The applicant hopes for final approval by the end of 2024 in order to complete the project in 2027. This will be the third and final phase of the Highland Village project on the corner of Guthrie and Anderton Road. The first two phases include two commercial buildings built in 2008. The final phase proposes 9 retail units and 205 residential rental units, with 36 studio, 110 one bed, 39 two bed, 9 three bed, and 11 ground loft level accessible units. Resident parking will be underground with surface parking for visitors and retail customers. Avatar Management Properties purchased the development in 2016.
