The City of Courtenay is proceeding with procurement for the 6th Street Pedestrian and Cycling Bridge. The four-metre-wide symmetrical cable-stayed bridge will provide cyclists, pedestrians and other people-powered transportation connections from the bottom of 6th Street to Simms Millennium Park. Once complete it will be an important connection to the extensive trail network on either side of the Courtenay River.

Courtenay: upcoming procurement for the 6th Street Pedestrian and Cycling Bridge

The City of Courtenay has issued a Notice of Upcoming Procurement for the 6th Street Pedestrian and Cycling Bridge for late October, early November. Staff anticipate that the scope of work highlights will include: Site preparation, excavation, and removals; Supply, fabrication, and erection of new pedestrian/cycling cable-stayed steel bridge over the Courtenay River and approach retaining walls; Construction of trail tie-ins, paving, and civil works at Simms Millennium Park side; Installation of electrical works for bridge lighting, cyclist counter, and miscellaneous components; Intersection upgrades at 6th Street and Anderton Ave and along 6th Street, including traffic management while working in the roadways; Landscaping across the project site, including plantings and hydroseeding; Supply and installation of security screening beneath bridge back spans; and Supply and installation of critter passage at east approach.

Campbell River: reduced DCC’s for affordable rental housing

Council adopted the Development Cost Charges Reduction Bylaw to reduce the Development Cost Charges (DCCs) for affordable rental housing by 50 per cent. The Housing Accelerator Fund (HAF) grant will be used to offset revenue loss related to DCC reductions for affordable housing, which aligns with the City’s commitment to developing financial incentives to support housing creation, particularly affordable and supportive housing. DCC reductions for eligible developments will be available until October 2027 or until the $250,000 program funding is exhausted. Updated Zoning Amendment Bylaw and Building Amendment Bylaw are available on the City website www.campbellriver.ca/bylaw-search. Powell River: approved DP for 60-unit townhouse development

Council directed staff to issue a Development Permit Variance that varies the maximum building height of a principal building in the RM1 Zone from 8.5 metres to 9.3 metres and a Development Permit for a proposed 60-unit townhouse development subject to payment of a landscape security deposit. Council adopted a rezoning application for this property in early September. As proposed, the applicant intends to build twelve buildings, each consisting of 5 townhouse units, to be built in phases and stratified upon completion. Parking is distributed throughout the development by way of single car garages and parking pads (driveways) provided for each townhouse unit. This project has been under development since 2023, when the applicant applied to rezone the property from A1 to CD4 to create an affordable neighbourhood with approximately 35 lots. The applicant then applied in 2024 for this 60-unit stratified, ground-oriented townhome project.
