Tofino: Trades Fair for Clayoquot Sound Biosphere Centre

The Clayoquot Sound Biosphere Centre (CSBC) will be a landmark 3-storey, 10,464 sq ft facility located at 301 Olsen Road in Tofino. This innovative building will serve as a vital gathering place for the local coastal communities, including Tla-o-qui-aht First Nations, Ahousaht, Hesquiaht First Nation, Ucluelet First Nation and Toquaht Nation. The project is designed with a focus on sustainability and innovation. It aims to achieve the Living Building Challenge Core certification and the Canadian Green Building Council’s Zero Carbon Building accreditation. The estimated construction start date is spring 2025. Project budget is estimated at $15 million. A trades fair is expected to be scheduled for early February.

Courtenay: Tender for an Options Analysis for the outdoor pool

The City has released a tender for an Options Analysis for Courtenay & District Memorial Outdoor pool. A condition assessment prior to the 2024 swim season identified a number of deficiencies, including mechanical and safety work (main drain), flow control of the recirculating pump, and the wading pool, in addition to a significant leak. The options analysis will consider everything from completing repairs to a complete rebuild of the facility. Currently, repairs identified in the condition assessment are estimated at $1.25 million while a new pool could cost up to $18 million. As part of the presentation, the City staff requested $250,000 for detailed construction design. The tender closes January 10; see the tender section.

Campbell River: Proposed 40-unit mixed-housing project

The applicant has submitted a subdivision application with the intent to create a bare land strata subdivision. This will pave the way for a 40-unit mixed-housing development project. The property, located at 620 Park Forest Drive, is situated within the Quinsam Heights neighborhood and spans an area of 3.94 acres. The subdivision will facilitate a mixed-housing development consisting of 5 duplex buildings and 10 triplex buildings. RM-1 zoning permits the development of low-rise residences in multiple-family complexes within the low or medium-density residential designation, typically one- and two-story patio homes and townhouses, but it may also include lower-profile apartment-style complexes. The design for the housing is expected to be finalized once the subdivision application has been approved.
