The provincial government’s decision to cancel the BC Community Housing Fund is creating uncertainty for affordable housing initiatives across the province.

The Community Housing Fund, launched through BC Housing in 2018, has been discontinued in the current provincial budget. This have left local affordable housing projects like Ḱ’waxdzi’dzas Housing Development in Cumberland looking at funding alternatives. This map shows the proposed location of the Cumberland project

The program, launched in 2018 through BC Housing, was intended to help deliver more than 20,000 affordable rental homes through partnerships with municipalities and non-profit housing providers. While projects that had already secured funding approvals are expected to continue, the cancellation halts new applications and leaves many planned developments without financing.

The Ḱ’waxdzi’dzas Housing Development in Cumberland is one of those projects. The timeline and funding path for the proposed 34 units building are now uncertain as proponents explore an alternate funding source.
