Wei Wai Kum First Nation is charting a new course as the majority owner of a proposed $600 million, 197-megawatt wind farm with 30 turbines.
The Yə̓yus Energy, formerly known as the Brewster Wind Project, will be located northwest of Campbell River. Wei Wai Kum owns 51 per cent of the wind project while Capstone, a Toronto-based renewable energy firm, owns the remainder. Construction may start in 2028.
The project has secured a 30-year electricity purchase agreement with BC Hydro. Once complete, the facility will generate enough renewable power for more than 56,000 average BC households annually. That would make it the largest power generating project on Vancouver Island.
It is expected up to 275 workers will required during peak construction and that the project will be guided by Laich-kwil-tach values and traditions. This includes a commitment to stewardship of the land and community. Jobs will include traditional construction, engineering, road building and resource work, but also offer opportunities for First Nations in the region to learn new skills and develop jobs tied to the clean technology sector.
Environmental studies and on-the-ground survey will occur in 2026, and a regulatory application to the province is expected early in 2027. For more information, visit: https://www.yayusenergy.com.
