Tofino and Courtenay: Both municipalities are preparing for new fire halls.

Tenders for two new fire hall projects were released this week. Tofino is seeking expressions of interest from contractors for a future request for proposal. The District is planning to build a new fire hall and training ground that will serve as a replacement for the existing firehall on Second Street. The fire hall will need to house 4 apparatus bays, offices, training room, turn out gear storage, decontamination facilities, maintenance facilities, laundry, Emergency Operations Center, fitness room, a pole and firefighter lounge. The City of Courtenay is requesting proposals for design and construction administration services. In 2023, the city allocated $2 million in funding from the provincial government’s Growing Communities Fund for the project. Construction is slated for 2026/27. Fire Hall #2 will be located on the site of the existing training grounds at 220 Waters Place.

Cumberland: Fourteen-lot industrial subdivision on Bevan Road.

The Village is reviewing a subdivision application for a fourteen lot subdivision on Bevan Road. This property is the next phase of the Bevan Industrial Lands. The applicant received a preliminary layout review (PLR) letter and is working with staff to resolve the conditions of this application. The applicant has submitted a development permit, development variance permit and Local Government Act frontage requirement waiver application, to facilitate the proposed lot layout. These matters were considered and adopted by Council at the January 27, 2025 regular meeting of Council. Approval of these applications was required to proceed with the requested lot layout. Each lot will have its own septic system until future access to the Village’s sewage infrastructure becomes available.

Courtenay: Construction of the $11+ million cycling bridge scheduled to begin in September.

Construction of the four-metre-wide bridge, which will connect 6th Street to Simms Park, is scheduled to begin in September 2025. The project team is currently securing materials, finalizing permits, and preparing for construction commencement. Project completion is anticipated by fall 2026. Details about traffic impacts and related Simms Park closures will be shared in the coming months as specific tasks and dates are confirmed. Traffic disruptions are expected to be focused on 6th Street – access to all businesses in the area will be maintained. In March 2025, the estimated overall cost for the work had been updated to $11.2 million from $6.9 million.
