The City of Courtenay expects to construct a new fire hall in East Courtenay in 2026. Design is underway and a tender award is expected soon.

Courtenay: $14 million East Courtenay Fire Hall project

Council has directed staff to proceed with the design of the East Courtenay Fire Hall, based on the Dashwood Fire Hall in Electoral Area G of the Regional District of Nanaimo. The East Courtenay Fire Hall will include two double-length, drive-through apparatus bays, with provisions to accommodate a third bay in the future to support long-term operational growth. In addition to space for administration and fire suppression crew support functions, the facility will include dormitory-style rooms for firefighters on shift, a health and wellness room, a training room, washrooms, and dedicated personal locker space for paid-on-call firefighters. A designated decontamination area will also be incorporated to allow firefighters to remove and clean contaminated gear and equipment upon returning from emergency responses. Construction is set to commence in 2026. The project will be delivered using a Construction Management (CCDC 5B) contract model to ensure improved budget control and early involvement of the contractor’s construction manager for practical and cost-effective decision-making as the design progresses. The total cost is expected to be around $14 million, less than previously budgeted. Council approved applying for a grant of up to $7 million for the project and the city plans to cover the rest through borrowing and other funds. The tender for detailed design and construction administration services closed on August 5th.

Powell River: 40-bed modular temporary shelter project

BC Housing, the City of Powell River and Lift Community Services are working together to develop a 40-bed temporary shelter at 7104 Barnet Street in Powell River. The City owns this property and plans to lease the site to BC Housing. No rezoning is required for this land use. Site work would start following the signing of the lease agreement, with construction intended to start in September 2025 and open the shelter later this fall. The Barnet Street shelter will use modular construction and provide 40 safe, secure spaces for people experiencing homelessness in Powell River. It will be open 24/7, year-round. Campbell River: approvals moving forward for 40-lot bare land strata development

Council approved a Major Development with Variance Permit for 620 Park Forest Drive. The permit approves a 40-lot bare land strata development with a mix of duplex and triplex buildings. Additionally, it approves a variance to increase the maximum lot coverage for eight of the 40 strata lots from 50 per cent to 59.9 per cent of the lot. The property is situated within the Quinsam Heights neighborhood and spans an area of 3.94 acres. The project will consist of 5 duplex buildings and 10 triplex buildings. A financial security for $370,093.75, representing 125% of the landscape estimate, is required prior to building permit issuance.
