Courtenay: tender released for supply and installation of an artificial turf at G.P. Vanier.
The Comox Valley Regional District is seeking a qualified synthetic turf contractor with expertise in the supply and installation of infilled synthetic turf systems. In 2025, Knappett Industries (2006) Ltd. was awarded Phase 1 of the project with construction of the artificial turf sports field with site preparation, earthworks, servicing, hard and soft landscaping, installation of supporting infrastructure, and lighting. In February 2025, the Alternative Approval Process to borrow $3 million for the proposed second Artificial Turf succeeded. The estimated cost at that time was $5,944,898. The tender for supply and install closes on February 26.
Comox Valley: RCMP seeking Letters of Support for a new detachment building.
The Comox Valley RCMP is seeking Letters of Support from local municipalities for a new detachment building. The current facility is 1700 sq.m. and over 40 years old. A number of critical infrastructure items have been identified to include structural instability and possible structure collapse from future seismic activity. Other issues to date include: asbestos in building materials, inconsistent heat and air flow, insufficient power supply, inadequate workspace, failing roof materials and the need to replace critical equipment such as a HVAC system. The projected cost for a new HVAC is estimated to be approximately two million dollars. In addition, building water mains are contributing harmful lead additives to the water supply. Finally, with the addition next door of a new purpose-built shelter and supportive housing complex in the coming year, the Detachment will require a secure fenceline that protects the integrity of the property and frontline equipment. This fence must be inline with Federal Government security standards and could cost the municipalities thousands of dollars. The RCMP believes it is time to begin serious discussions on cost, feasibility and project planning for a new detachtment.
Comox: Fire Station replacement project will proceed if Class A cost estimates are under $6.1 million.
Council has approved proceeding with releasing at request for proposal to determine the final Class A cost estimate for the Fire Station replacement project. That RFP is expected in the next few weeks. Council also approved a Municipal Finance Authority Loan of up to $7 million to fund construction, and passed a motion authorizing construction of the Fire Station Replacement if the total Class A cost is less than $6.1 million. Comox Fire Rescue has applied for a $5 million Strategic Priorities Fund grant, and expects award results by early summer. Finally, council approved moving forward $300,000 from the 2027 to the 2026 capital budget for sprinkler installation, roof repair and concrete apron repair to be completed in coordination with the Fire Station replacement project. If the project proceeds, the current office/classroom portion of the building will be demolished for a three storey facility. The fire truck bay area will remain the same. That portion was structurally updated in the 90s and should see another 40+ years of service. A feature of the new facility will be up to five bedrooms on the top floor that will provide on-site overnight presence and affordable housing.
