Courtenay: Upgrades to Cousins Avenue
The City of Courtenay is moving forward with upgrades to Cousins Avenue between Willemar Avenue and 20th Street. Detailed design is now underway and residents are invited to learn more about the project and share feedback at a pop-up information session at Cousins Park on June 16, from 4:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. As proposed, the project includes full road reconstruction, as well as upgrades to sidewalks, curbing, landscaping and trail connections. Many of the underground utilities in this area were installed decades ago and have reached the end of their service life, making this work both timely and necessary. Powell River: 43-unit supportive housing and 20-bed shelter project.
Council has rezoned the former Complex Way lands from A2 (Large Lot Rural) to NT (Institutions) to support a proposed BC Housing supportive housing and shelter project. The property fronts Joyce Avenue and is adjacent to the hospital property located at 5000 Joyce Avenue. BC Housing has requested that the City partner with them to facilitate the development of 40 single-occupancy residential supportive units, 4 respite Complex Care Housing beds, and 20 shelter spaces. Further approvals, including lease negotiations and building permits, will still be required before construction can proceed.
Campbell River: $24.74 million to rebuild Carihi Secondary School
The province has approved $24.74 million to rebuild two wings at Carihi Secondary School. In November 2024, a fire damaged Carihi Secondary School’s A-wing, which included the gym and several learning spaces. Parts of the B-wing were also damaged by smoke and water and will require remediation. With funding now approved, the School District will proceed with determining project timelines and issuing a request for proposal for a construction manager.
