Port Alberni: seeking Planning Consultant for Somass Lands redevelopment
The City of Port Alberni has advanced the Somass Lands redevelopment by issuing a request for proposals to retain a planning and engagement consultant to lead community consultation for the project. The consultant will deliver a two-stage public engagement program to support the master planning and rezoning of the 43-acre waterfront redevelopment, including public open houses, stakeholder meetings, online engagement, and “What We Heard” reports. The consultation process will help refine the redevelopment vision, which includes mixed-use residential, commercial, industrial, marine, and public waterfront uses. Questions regarding this RFP must be submitted to purchasing@portalberni.ca prior to July 29, 2026, at 4:00 PM Pacific Time. Respondents are advised not to contact any other representatives of the City, Matthews West, or any third parties in connection with this RFP. Doing so may result in disqualification. The tender closes August 10, 2026
Ucluelet: Covenant amendments advance the Lot 16 Marine Drive development
The District of Ucluelet is working with the owner of the proposed Lot 16 Marine Drive residential development to resolve issues that have stalled the project. The 12.7-acre site is approved for a mixed housing development including a 48-unit rental apartment building, 28 townhouse units and single-family residential lots. Council has now approved amendments to the project’s Section 219 Covenant after negotiations aimed at resolving infrastructure timing and development phasing requirements. According to the District, the project has been delayed because the owner has been unable to secure a builder for the multi-family component and because the required upfront road construction made the development financially challenging. The covenant amendments are intended to help facilitate delivery of the housing project while maintaining the overall vision for the site.
Campbell River: Thunderbird Subdivision and Elders Complex infrastructure tender
The We Wai Kai Nation is advancing the Thunderbird Subdivision and Elders Complex on IR 12 in Campbell River. The mixed residential development includes 37 single-family lots and an Elders Complex with 18 duplex units and a common building. The project follows a September 2024 BC Housing announcement to deliver 37 new rental homes in partnership with the Nation as part of a provincial Indigenous housing initiative. The Nation is now inviting tenders for roads, underground utilities, sidewalks, street lighting, stormwater infrastructure, and site servicing. Phase 1 of the Elders Complex is scheduled for substantial completion by November 30, 2026, with the remaining civil works to be completed by June 15, 2027. The tender closes July 29, 2026.
