Cumberland: Project awarded for Phase 2 of Lagoon Upgrades
Milestone Contracting Inc is the successful bidder for the Village of Cumberland’s Phase 2 High Performance Lagoon upgrades, in the amount of $1,074,093 (excluding GST). Milestone was one of two bidders, and bids received were below expectations, leaving a contingency available. Work will begin immediately on the creek relocation, which is not dependent on approval of the Liquid Waste Management Plan (LWMP) and can proceed once environmental permits are in place. The remainder of Phase 2 was tendered as optional work because final LWMP approval and some permits are still pending. Council’s approval authorizes the entire Phase 2 contract, allowing staff to continue directly into the remaining work once approvals are received without returning to Council for another contract award.
Town of Comox: Upgrades to the Comox Fire Station
The Town of Comox has received $5 million through the Community stream of the Strategic Priorities Fund and funding will go towards the Comox Fire Station upgrade project. Built to post-disaster standards with backup power, the station will operate as the Town’s Emergency Operations Centre during emergencies. The design also includes dedicated decontamination, laundry, and shower facilities; expanded training, classroom, kitchen, and office spaces; universal accessibility features such as an elevator and accessible washrooms; and five affordable on-site lodging units to support faster nighttime response times and improved service levels throughout the community. As a result of the grand, Council approved two additional funding measures for the project: $150,000 from the Affordable Housing Fund in addition to the $100,000 previously approved, to support the firefighter housing units associated with the project and an additional $250,000 for project enhancements and additional scope, including solar panels, automatic rear gate to the training centre area, upgrading heat in truck bays, new flag poles and planters, fire station traffic stoplights, security cameras, and new siding and lighting on truck bays to match new construction. In January, Council approved a Municipal Finance Authority Loan of up to $7 million to fund construction.
Campbell River: Cedar Ridge six storey residential complex completed
Construction has wrapped up, and units are now available for rent in this six-storey, 65-unit apartment building with ground-floor commercial space. The pet-friendly units feature in-suite laundry, private balconies, and storage. Current rents start at $1,898 for a 679 sq.ft. one-bedroom, $2,198 for an 846 sq.ft. two-bedroom, one-bathroom, and $2,248 for a 941 sq.ft. two-bedroom, two-bathroom unit. The building permit was issued in May 2024 with a construction value of $13.9 million.
